What will I need to join the course?

There are no specific entry requirements. If you are attending school, or have recently attended school, you should be able to convince us that you have a sound reason for choosing this course. The course is open to all age groups, male or female, whatever your age or background you will certainly be a person who enjoys working with your hands.

What will I be doing?

Following a 2 year Carpentry and Joinery programme, developing existing practical skills and relevant technical knowledge for safe use of materials and equipment in the following areas:

BENCH JOINERY:

  • Preparing, Fabricating and Finishing
  • Using relevant woodworking machinery safely
  • Doors and frames
  • Units and fitments
  • Staircases
  • Power tools

How long will the course last and what patterns of attendance are available?

The two-year course begins in September of each year. You should have completed the introduction and the first part of specialist skills training by May of the following year. In the second year you will continue to gain further experience to enable you to complete the level 2 qualification.

What will I achieve?

You will gain knowledge and skills to enable you to seek employment in the building industry which is still one of the major employment sectors in the UK, including the CSCS card which is the Health & Safety requirement of most large construction sites. You will achieve a level 2 qualification (to be confirmed at interview). You will also have the opportunity to study other relevant qualifications related to the construction industry.

Key Skills
Through your studies you will be given the opportunity to improve and receive certification of your Key Skills in Communication, Application of Number and Information Technology. In many cases you will also be able to achieve further qualifications in Problem Solving, Improve Own Learning and Performance as well as Working with Others. All key skills are nationally recognised qualifications to improve not only your employability skills but also assist your university application by attracting additional UCAS points.

How will my progress on the course be assessed?
In the main by continuous practical testing. These are set phase tests. Your progress is regularly monitored and feedback given. In order for you to receive training on some specialist equipment, it will be necessary for you to attend Lowestoft College for a period to learn use of the equipment and for the purpose of assessment this will be discussed further at interview.

What will it cost?

Tuition fees to be confirmed. Students under 19 do not pay tuition or exam fees. Students claiming income-based benefits may receive a discount on tuition fees, but will be liable for full registration/examination fees.

And the future?
Employment, the type of work in the building industry is so varied that your future will depend on your skills, preferences and the opportunities available. The College offers the opportunity to enter into employment through the Modern Apprenticeship Programme. Further training on Full time courses.
