CONSTRUCTION COURSES INCLUDING BTEC

This is a 2 year course to which you will work to achieving the following qualification:

Level 1, 6218 Introductory Certificate in Basic Construction Skills (City & Guilds) in Year 1

You can then progress onto the:

BTEC, Level 2, Extended Certificate in Construction in the Built Environment in Year 2 (Edexcel)

(This is decided through further interview and completion of the Level 1 qualification)

What will I need to join the course?

An interest in all aspects of the Construction industry. Protective footwear and overalls.

What will I be doing?

Gain experience for a range of skills in the construction industry:

  • Carpentry and Joinery

  • Electrical Installation (only in BTEC)
  • Painting and Decorating
  • Plumbing
  • Brickwork
Whilst undertaking the BTEC Qualification you will gain an understanding of the Construction Industry and of the economic and environmental issues. Gain and understanding of Health and Safety within the Construction Industry.

What will I achieve?

You will be awarded the Level 1 Introductory Certificate in Basic Construction Skills on successful completion of the required combination of units. A total of 13 credits to be awarded a Certificate in Basic Construction Skills (6218/03) are required to achieve the qualification.

On completion of the BTEC Qualification you will be awarded the BTEC Level 2 First Certificate in Construction after successfully completing the two core subjects: Introduction to the Construction Industry and Exploring Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction and a practical unit – Construction Methods and Techniques for Low rise domestic buildings and exploring carpentry and joinery, performing plumbing operations and performing electrical operations.

How will my progress on the course be assessed?
You will undertake practical assessments in all of the five trade disciplines following a period of training on practice exercises which will give the required tool skills to attempt the assessments. (This is for the Level 1 City and Guilds course). Assignments will need to be completed both practically and written for the BTEC qualification.

How long will the course last and what patterns of achievement are available?
The course duration is 2 years/1 day a week at the North Suffolk Skills Centre in Halesworth.

And the future?
From this course you may wish to progress onto either a full-time construction course or into employment.
