Is this the right course for me?

This is a professional course in hairdressing for post 16 learners who wish to train for a new career or gain new skills and interests. You should have an interest in people and have good communication skills.

What will I need to join the course?

Although there are no formal entry requirements you will need an interview. A personal reference will also be requested. If you have a Hairdressing Level 1 certificate it "would be beneficial to you to bring it along to the interview.

Enthusiasm, dedication, a mature attitude and a satisfactory grasp of the English language are a prerequisite of the course. Most importantly, a genuine desire for a career in hairdressing.

What will I be doing?

Over the two years course of study you will be covering the following subjects:

LEVEL2:
UNIT G1 - Ensure your own activities reduce risks to health and safety
UNIT G4 - Fulfil salon reception duties
UNIT G5 - Give clients a positive impression of yourself and your organisation
UNIT G7 - Advise and consult with clients
UNIT G8 - Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
UNIT H9 - Shampoo and condition hair and scalp
UNIT H6 - Cut hair using basic techniques
UNIT H10 - Style, dress & finish hair using basic techniques
UNIT H13 - Change hair colour using basic techniques

OPTIONAL:
UNIT H12 - Perm and neutralise hair using basic techniques

All practical sessions after initial training are client based where the North Suffolk Skills Centre Salon becomes a working environment.

How long will the course last?

Two years, over four days. Times will change through the year due to course requirements, but will start at the same times each session. These days are subject to change and are not guaranteed to stay the same for the second year.

What will I achieve?

NVQ Level II Hairdressing VTCT (Vocational Training Charitable Trust). There will be an option to obtain the NVQ Level 1 qualification if you choose to do so additional fees will apply.

How will my progress on the course be assessed?
Throughout the course you will be assessed by observation of practical skills, written tests, oral questions and assignments.

Both the Hairdressing kit and uniform must be purchased BEFORE the course commences. Order forms will be given to you by the Guidance and Information Officer once you have been accepted on the course.

Students who complete the course may gain employment in any of the following environments as a junior stylist:

  • Fashion Houses

For further training:
Level III and IV advanced hairdressing qualifications.
