Is this the right course for me?

The course will suit students who have a genuine and enthusiastic interest in the hospitality and catering industry .

The Certificate in General Cookery supports the development of basic preparation and cooking skills which include:-

  • Introduction to the hospitality industry
  • Customer service in the hospitality industry
  • Introduction to healthy eating
  • Basic food preparation and cooking
  • Introduction to food commodities
  • Using kitchen equipment
  • Food Safety in Catering (Level 2)

What will I need to join the course?

We look for enthusiasm, good communication skills, a positive attitude, good personal presentation, a satisfactory grasp of the English language and most importantly, a genuine desire to build a firm foundation for a career in the hospitality and catering industry.

A range of teaching methods are used – lectures, practical sessions and educational visits. Students will work in the Centre’s training kitchen in a realistic working environment.

How long will the course last?

Day release over two years at the North Suffolk Skills Centre.

What will I achieve?

City and Guilds Level 1 Certificate in General Cookery (QCF =14 credits)

How will my progress on the course be assessed?
Throughout the course you will be assessed by observation of your practical skills, oral questioning, assignments and classroom work that build into a portfolio.

And the future?
Students who complete the course may like to continue training in hospitality and catering to gain a Level 2 either through a full-time college course or work related learning.
